My first time lapse video

If I’d been left to my own devices this would have been a lot louder and messier. So it was quite nice to work to someone else’s specifications. Namely Sarah Blood’s.

The hardest part for me was creating the credits using a subtitle function on my editing software, so they really were done frame by frame. I removed a lot of buzzing sound effects from them at the artist’s behest and replaced them with the soothing loop of cars at night time, which I hope emulate the rhythmic pounding of the sea, or something. All in all the weirdest part of animating words that flicker was in attempting to create something that appears arhythmic and chaotic, but creating it organically. working in two frame glimpses it’s a little like trying to dance off the beat or clap out of time. Your brain fights you every step.

All in all a satisfying experience, made all the more enjoyable by a subject matter which lends itself to photography, but I have a lot to learn about sound mixing and soundscape creation. Next time I might try to do something more daring with the motion shots, which ended up being my favourite part.

The glowing and darkening effect at the end was achieved, as you might have guessed, by taking pictures with long exposures and then reducing the exposure time incrementally to hundredths and thousandths of a second. this effect combined with lights in motion might have the potential to do something interesting or even create a special effect for use in narrative video. We’ll have to see.

anyways, please have a look at Sarah Blood’s other work, which is just as exciting as this brand new piece, which can be viewed at the ‘Creative Cohesion Glass Education Network’ studios in Sunniside, which is in Sunderland, which is in the UK, which is closer than you think.

ALSO: if anyone can offer me any advice on uploading videos to youtube so that they stay in HD then I could really use a minute of your time. The uncompressed file is almost three gigs and made of, like two thousand 12megapixel photos. It took around sixteen hours to upload to youtube uncompressed so why on earth it’s in 480p is quite beyond me. any words of wisdom? anyone..?

anyone..?

Stand as a knite!

Mork calling Orson…

I can’t believe I don’t remember seeing this as a kid. I always loved Mork and Mindy, and Happy Days aswell- somehow during the early eighties I never realised that these shows were being made at the present time. I always assumed that Happy Days had really been made in the fifties. Mork and mindy the same- since they used to crossover from time to time.

God, I was a stupid kid.

THESE PICTURES DEVELOPED FROM A CONVERSATION ABOUT RACISTISM

A great many gweat bwitish people consider the golly (or gollywog as I’m certain it used to be known) to be less a caricatured African and more a warm, friendly reminder of their nursery days and Noddy and Andy Pandy and playaway and the war and women who knew their place. Faced with animosity from politically-correct lefty-liberals like myself many stores particularly in the north of England have begun selling gollywogs again. Partly for nostalgia, partly as an act of defiance and partly, one senses, that they are doing what they feel is their part in making bwitain gweat again.

A very dear family member knitted this doll for a friend and when I saw it I had a predictably politically correct moment and went mad. I told them it was a racist throwback and belonged in history with Al Jolson and Mickey Rooney and Hitler. They said don’t be silly, it’s just a knitted follywog and besides I was the racist for saying it even resembled a black person, let alone the black person to whom it was to be gifted. We agreed to disagree and left it sitting on a chair in the living room.

But would you believe what it went and did the moment our backs were turned? It went to a dolly take-away and helped itself!! Honestly! Next it’ll be wanting the right to vote!!

still, just look how happy he is…

Take your heart in your hands and see the incredible skills on display.

If you like going “ooh” and “eeh” then I can strongly recommend the source material- what my climbing friends call ‘porn’ at any rate.

www.chatroulette.com

Isn’t it difficult to read that word without applying a french accent to it mentally?

Chatroulette is a new iteration of the old-as-the-internet chat room and we all know what to expect in one of those. I wouldn’t normally bother but since it’s so heavily populated at present I went on there to see what people were up to. After being skipped a number of times I had a quite long and depressing conversation with a man of a similar age who had similarly recently become single and was similarly disgusted by all the wanking. We compared our similar interests, swapped the names of similar authors we would each enjoy, discussed our similar woes and similar feelings of injustice and impotence. Bored of each other we made similar excuses at the self same lull in the conversation and wished each other a vague sort of wellness.

Thoroughly depressed at my completely average problems and totally predictable lifestyle and interests I killed myself there and then. I assume he did the same.

All in all, if I ever return to chatroulette I will give some serious consideration to just wanking at a stranger.
